Tour of Wales Day 8 - Llanthony Priory to Mells - 79 miles

(Written from home after the event)...

Struck camp for the last time on the trip, thinking that my gear probably won’t see the light of day again until next year. 

We set out to the east, and soon said goodbye to Rod, who forked off, bound for Hereford. Guy and I rode on to Usk. We stopped for coffee in the flower garden of a posh interior decor shop. All went well until I needed the loo - I had to queue in a rather confined fancy room. Clearly, all the posh fragrances that were on display couldn’t shroud the odours of this sweaty cyclist who had spent the past week in the saddle!! Noses were turned.....

A fine ride along the old A40 from Usk to Chepstow, then a meal deal sandwich lunch outside our favourite Tesco Express. 

Next, over the old Severn Bridge, and around the western outskirts of Bristol. We found our way onto the familiar run of the Bristol to Bath Cycleway, and shared this last segment of our trip with legions of other cyclists, dog walkers and pram pushers. 

After a final pot of tea and cake at Warmley Station, we rode on to Mells and completed our journey. 

A mighty fine trip with two great companions - many thanks Rod and Guy, I can’t wait for the next time!

Seal Hunting Circumnavigation!

Cracking day's paddling with Craig, Claire and Will.  We set out from the Portsmouth Lifeboat station, and headed clockwise around Hayling Island with a strong spring tide behind us.  First stop was the slip by The Ship car park, by the road bridge for a coffee and snack.  We then headed on and pulled up for lunch on Thorney Island.  After a good feed and water, we pressed on and soon saw a seal in the shallows.  We paddled up reasonably close and the seal seemed to enjoy our presence.  Soon we encountered several more seals, which was wonderful.  We then headed out through the channel by Hayling Lifeboat station into the Solent, still with a very string following tide.  We had a final stop on the south coast of Hayling Island for an ice cream.  We then headed back westwards along the coast.  We were all rather knackered by that stage.   The mouth to the western channel entrance was just visible and slowly getting closer as we ...
